In horses, lactating mares release substances referred to as "appeasing" pheromones, which relax and reassure their foals. Research has shown that horses recognize these pheromones throughout life. Pheromones are natural, chemical messengers secreted involuntarily by mammals, which stimulate a specific reaction in another member of the same species. These appeasing pheromones can be found on the skin in an area called the "wax area," close to the mammae of a mare that is suckling her foal.
