Jean Abernethy/ Fergus
I
grew up in rural Ontario, a good situation to acquire and cultivate
a love for domestic animals, and horses in particular. With
the good fortune to have a pony as a child, and later a horse,
riding became an assumed skill in our family. When inclement
weather kept the horse in the barn, I worshipped horses with
pencil and paper. Living in a hilarious family situation always
kept the humor level high, and that spilled into the drawings
too.
There were never enough horse books in the school libraries
to satisfy me. Never.
I practically had them all memorized, and traced volumes of
C.W. Anderson's illustrations from the Billy & Blaze series,
trying to figure out how he drew so beautifully.

Photo: This little fellow and I hit the trails every
Sunday morning here in the Georgia woods.
I built the saddle on this little horse. It's a replica
1885 style saddle.

I figured
it out.
Acceptance of my work spurred me on, and inspired me to formally
study Equestrian skills and art in college.
The Canadian Trotting Association, Florida Standardbred Breeder's
& Owner's Association, The American Paint Horse Association,
Ontario Jockey Club, Horse Publications Group, Pat & Monty
Roberts Inc. are just a few of the many organizations I have
had the pleasure of working with.
As for Fergus and I? We're just getting started. Hold onto
your hat!
