Preparing your mare for the breeding shed means having her in prime breeding condition on presentation to the stallion to optimize the likelihood for conception in the least possible time.
By putting some thought and effort into preparing your mare before the breeding season begins, you will save time, money and disappointment later on.
Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds, like many other breeds, have an official birth date of January 1. This, combined with the large number of two-year-old stakes events available, puts pressure on the breeders to have their mares foal out early in the calendar year, and has resulted in the official breeding season starting in mid-February. Most mares' natural estrous cycles do not begin until late April or early May. In addition to trying to breed mares out of their natural breeding season, pressure is also put on the mares' manager to breed those mares more precisely and inseminate them less frequently. This is because the more successful stallions have large books, and are better able to cover those large books if the mares are presented for breeding evenly throughout the breeding season instead of being weighted towards the end of the breeding season, which is what regularly occurs. When the majority of mares do present for breeding late in the breeding season, it results in the stallion's semen being in short supply, and further pressure is put on the mare breeder by the stallion manager to ensure that their mare is bred with a single insemination per heat cycle.
For these reasons, it has become imperative for mare management to be accurate and thorough in the preparation of the mare if she is to be bred successfully.
