HORSE DRAWN TECHNOLOGY
Light-Force-Therapy is bringing
relief to thousands of chronic pain and arthritis sufferers
"Hail the horses
of the nation
Hear the stories of them told
How they carried kingdoms' armies
How they won Olympic gold
Carried Washington and Paul Revere
Helped set this country free
Carried Roosevelt and Houston
John Wayne and Grant and Lee"
Excerpt from "Breaker in the Pen" by Joel Nelson
Horses
have played a major role in shaping human society. They have carried
us into war and into new lands. They have pulled our plows, our
carriages and our wagons. They have raced, roped, jumped, and performed
at every level. They have been our partners, our companions, and
our friends.
Today
we humans continue to benefit from our relationship with the horse.
Now thousands of people who have struggled with chronic pain and
arthritis, often without hope, are finding relief from their pain
through Light-Force-Therapy products. Yet, this technology would
not have been developed if for one woman's special relationship
with her horse.
Jana
Sullivan was facing a horse owner's worst nightmare. Her beloved
friend and companion of many years, a Peruvian Paso named Quesadilla,
was dying. She had inexplicably stopped eating and was slowly wasting
away. In the end, Jana could do nothing but stand by helplessly
and watch as her friend slowly died. The cause of Quesadilla's death
was never diagnosed.
Less
than two years after Quesadilla's death, after months of studying
research from Russia and China dating back to the 1960's, Jana Sullivan
had developed a prototype of the hand-held device that would become
the flagship product of Light-Force-Therapy. The technology was
based on photo-stimulation: a process, which uses LEDs (light emitting
diodes) to produce beams of light at specified wavelengths and frequencies.
Photo-stimulation, or LED therapy, relieves acute or chronic pain
associated with disease or injury. LED therapy also increases circulation
and decreases the inflammation associated with joint pain, thereby
increasing range of motion.
Doug
and Kim Peterson of Peyton, CO purchased their first Super Nova
and Acubeam units in 1997 and began experimenting with the lights
on their equestrian clientele. They experienced positive results
immediately, but the real test of the technology came when they
received a call from Hilary Wood, of the Colorado Springs based
Front Range Equine Rescue Center, regarding the plight of a horse
named Tigger.
Tigger
was a rescue horse that had been badly mistreated in the past and
was recovering from a severe leg injury. His current injury, a badly
torn tendon, brought him to Front Range Equine Rescue. Tigger had
already received traditional therapy and veterinary care but his
prognosis was not good. He refused to walk or bear weight on his
leg unless he was hungry and even then he would hobble only a short
distance for food. Front Range Equine Rescue was beginning to consider
humane euthanasia for Tigger.
Equine
Therapeutic Specialties was Tigger's last hope. Doug and Kim Peterson
began treatment immediately with a daily regimen of Light Force
Therapy treatments combined with magnetic wraps. When Hilary saw
Tigger again two weeks later she was amazed to see that he was already
beginning to walk around in his run. He still had a severe limp
but improvement was evident in his willingness to move voluntarily.
His eyes were losing the look of pain and hopelessness and were
becoming soft again.
Three
months later Tigger could be turned out in a round pen where he
trotted for the first time since his ordeal began. Tigger continued
to improve to the point that he could eventually be adopted and
was suitable for light riding.
Encouraged
by Tigger's amazing turn around, Equine Therapeutic donated Light-Force-Therapy
products for Hilary's own use at Front Range Equine Rescue. Over
the years she has treated many injured and abused horses, always
with good results. "I have never seen the lights fail to work
on a horse," states Hilary. "The immediate response you
generally see is relaxation."
The
success that the Petersons experienced time and time again treating
injuries in horses prompted them to approach Jana Sullivan about
buying the rights to her Light-Force-Therapy company. The Petersons
and Jana Sullivan reached an agreement in 1998 and Kim Peterson,
as the new CEO of Light Force Therapy, began actively marketing
their products to horse owners.
Almost
immediately, Doug and Kim began to notice a peculiar phenomena.
Horse owners were beginning to report how well the Light-Force-Therapy
device worked on their own aches and pains. Even though the products
were being marketed exclusively for equestrian use, horse owners
were experimenting with the lights on a wide variety of their own
painful conditions.
Judy
Saltsburg purchased the Light Force Therapy machines to try on her
horses at her farm located in Dillsburg, PA. "I got them and
tried to prove they were hocus-pocus" said Saltsburg, whose
son is a veterinarian. Saltsburg tried the devices on her arthritic
hip and back and was amazed. "I no longer take aspirin,"
she said.
Not
only did the Petersons know that Light Force Therapy products worked;
they also knew the technology was safe. There are no harmful side
effects associated with LED therapy, like those of many drugs on
the market. So the Petersons began the arduous process of obtaining
FDA clearance to market their products to humans. In late October
2000, they were successfully approved!
